So far this weekend Beasts of War have added eight – count them, that’s 8! – new Mantic videos to their website, and the fun doesn’t stop there as they have even more new content being added today!
We’re not going to tell you what’s coming up today however, you’ll have to keep a beady eye of the BoW site but I can tell you if it anything like the other videos they’ve been putting out, you wouldn’t want to miss out!
Today here at Mantic we are all really excited as we get to show you your first real look at the 3-ups for our new Zombie set. Ronnie just couldn’t wait to share his thoughts with you.
“Isn’t it funny how sometimes you feel as if you’ve got it right – hit the nail on the head etc..
I with the rest of Mantic have noticed that there has been considerable comment on the Web regarding our Ghouls – you have been kind enough to give us lots of positive feedback on those models (we love ‘em too!)
One issue that kept arising was the notion that our Ghouls were a little too ‘aware’ as undead – possibly too aware to be good zombie figures.
Well . . . . . . .
That’s just what we had thought too! We knew that in the undead pantheon that ghouls occupy a specific place in our fantasy wargames mythos ie they are the human guys who run about in a flesh crazed frenzy, rabid for the blood of the enemy.
Now Zombies – they are different. Necromantically raised from the ground, these are once dead bodies shamble across the battlefield, puppets of their evil master, their bodies in varying states of decay and disassembly.
So in making our Mantic Zombies we deliberately took into account our Ghouls – the Zombie models are designed to crossfit with the Ghouls giving you even more variety in your undead horde.
Again we’ve had a bit of ‘ManticFun’ – we have included a base which allows you to model a Zombie without legs – this little piece is similar in design to the ‘emerging skeleton’ base in our Skeleton warriors and Revenants sets. Of course we’ve also added a couple more little touches that we think you’ll appreciate…!
Bob”
ED: We’re bursting with excitement at the moment at the thought of Zombies (maybe there’s something wrong with us?) so couldn’t resist giving you a little sneak peak at some of the early work-in-progress sculpts that Bob kindly photographed! Check back for more tomorrow!
Yup, it’s the worst kept secret in wargaming (so far anyway…): Mantic are going to be releasing brand new plastic Zombies for the Undead range.
This week on the blog is dedicated to this brand new set and we kick off with an interview from a certain Mr Naismith, the sculptor of the Mantic Zombies. We even have a sneak preview of one of the figures, just one of the variations you can make with the set. Over to you Bob…
“Once again Mantic gave me a great brief –‘Make us some Zombies Bob’ they said.
So – a bit like the ghouls previously we examined the way that zombies come about- the fact that they are genuine undead and apparently mindless, though not necessarily slow. With the waist join that we used in the ghoul set we decided if it aint broke, don’t fix it… so we kept that design – of course this means that the two sets are crossfitting so there is a lot of kitbashing opportunity out there.
Needless to say the Zombies gave us more opportunity to build a Mantic version of the zombie niche imagery – naked or near naked humanoid bodies, bones and muscles exposed across their forms, creeping, walking, shambling or indeed shuffling towards the enemy with undead determination (whatever that means!)
Here’s a little preview of one of the three-up sculpts (keep checking back over the week for new and better images – this one is the only the beginning!)
Also we had another chance to inject some humour into the set. The idea of the semi-bodied zombie arose from the idea of the ‘unstoppable’ attacker who just keeps coming at you no matter what! So we added a ‘no legs’ base to carry the torsos and the obvious partner for this, the spine sticking up from a set of legs option (ED: you’ll have to check back to a later blog to catch a glimpse of these!) Yes I know that it’s a wee bit of dark humour but after all the idea of zombies is a little on the dark side anyway – we wanted to lift the tone a bit with these innovative additions – which also make the set very 3D when ranked up you’ll find.
After yesterday’s model went down so well, we know you all want to see…
BERSERKERS!
So here you are (make sure you click the thumbnail for a closer look):
Resplendant with axes and command group, these metal figures are currently only available in Grafe’s Steel Legion, due for release August 18th. These guys look great alongside the plastics and adding a unit of mad, crazed and/or drunk (delete as appropriate) will only increase how dangerous your dwarf host really is on the tabletop.
Hmm, on the other hand, we’re sure someone said they wanted to see Zombies? Maybe next week? Seems like we have a lot to get through before the 31st July when we unleash the Beasts of War!
Every Dwarf army needs a King and luckily we have the talents of a certain Mr White helping us with that!
Kev popped into the office with the figures for the Dwarf King’s War Counsel and, true to the artwork, he’s produced something outstanding. Check out the thumbnails below for a closer look at the new models.
The Dwarf King’s War Counsel will have a total of 4 metal hero models including a berserker lord and a war smith and is included in Grafe’s Steel Legion – the biggest, baddest Dwarf army deal the likes of which has never been before!
Oh yes, this is only one of the sculpts from the set and as you can see he is now armed and has a head!
The Dwarf Berserker set will initially contain five metal figures including a command group, though only for a limited time. This gives you the option of getting them now rather than in the future when they will be done in plastic, meaning you can create atrue Mantic force in one hit – and what a good one it’ll be as well!
We’ve still got the other figures to show-off as well, as well as one or two more sets for the Dwarfs to come. Try not to drool too much and leave us a comment below!
We’ve teased, we’ve tempted, we’ve even included them in our new Dwarf King’s Throng army deal (10 of the little blighters too!) – but today we’re going to show some sculpts!
This shot is an early-days WIP of the metal Dwarf Berserkers – just to show you how they are shaping up! Remy has been working exceptionally hard on these, and it’s really showing through in the sculpts. These are going to be the baddest Dwarfs on the block and, when armed with their twin axes, even the ghouls (maybe the zom… oh, not just yet…) had better watch their backs!
Make sure you click on the thumbnails (just to look at all that detail!) and drop us a comment below.

So until we have the finished articles, I have these 2 little snap shots.
The first is a photo of the riders…
metal revenant riders - straight from the casting room!
The second is a Work in Progress of the paint jobs, submitted by a jolly talented painter…
