Grak’s Revenge

Grak’s ax bit deep into the chest of the twisted dwarf in front of him, hacking through its blood-encrusted armour and jarring against its spine. The stunted creature’s death-gurgle ended abruptly as he pulled his blade clear and launched himself at the his next target. All around him, dwarves were dying, slaughtered like mawspawn at a cull. His orcs had caught them off-guard, just like he’d planned, and now the darklings were at their mercy. He roared his triumph to the four winds and lashed out with a brutal backhand swing, separating a head from its shoulders. His war-cry was taken up by the rest of his tribe as they pushed on towards their objective. Not far left to go. These impudent scum would soon learn that no one steals from Grak Skulltaker and gets away with it.

Orcs have been a fan favourite since they were first released two years ago, and now they’re getting a bit of a boost! We’ve already covered the Trolls, Chariot and Fight Wagon that are adding to their ranks, but did you know that the Orc Ax Horde has been repackaged as a full “Krudghorde” of 40 rather than the previous horde of 30 – for the same price? That’s just how we do things at Mantic!

To help you get started with an Orc force, we’ve put together two new website-exclusive Army Deals: Gakamak’s Green Tide and Grak’s Skull-Taker Horde.

Gakamak's Green Tide

Gakamak’s Green Tide is a great starting point for an Orc army, or a good way of expanding an existing force! You get 40 Ax, 40 Greatax, 20 Gore Riders, 3 Chariots, six Trolls and a Krudger to lead them. It’s worth noting that if you put the chariots into a single Troop of 3, every unit (except the lone hero) is a solid unit, meaning you can add plenty of heroes and monsters to the mix! Also, it means you can take this army as allies for any other Evil army – Kings of War works great on a large scale, so why not try some massive games?

s skull taker hordeIf you’re really serious about starting an Orc army, and you want to get playing proper games right away, your best bet is Grak’s Skull-Taker Horde! You get two Krudgers (one on foot and one on a Gore), two Flaggers (perfect for keeping your army from fleeing the battlefield!), 4 Chariots, a Fight Wagon, 6 Trolls, 20 Gore Riders, 80 Ax and 40 Greatax, as well as a pile of Orclings. It’s a massive box of models, netting you a whopping 1800 points in-game – and that’s before you add in any magical artefacts. You could just throw in, say, a couple more Fight Wagons, or an allied Ogre unit, to bring it up to 2000 – then you’d be ready for a  tournament!

Head over to the Kings of War Advance Orders section for details of these deals as well as several others, and let us know what you think in the comments section!

(Kings of) War Stories

Hello, Manticites! (Is that the correct word for Mantic fans? Not sure what else it could be. Manticologists? Manticinos? Any suggestions?)

Hope you all had a good weekend. Here in the Mantic office we’re back to the grindstone as if we never left; I’m ploughing through LOKA surveys like a man possessed, Curis is laying out a rather shiny new Kings of War expansion book, and Chris is noticeably absent as he’s left the country for a fortnight’s holiday! Elsewhere in the office, Stewart’s just sent out the Deadzone survey and is trying to keep up with the multitude of replies that that are currently assaulting his inbox. He’s also posted an update on the Deadzone Kickstarter page, showing off a few things that Sylvain (our über-talented in-house sculptor) is working on; here’s a sneak preview!

P1000635

I wonder what it could be…

Anyway, what I really want to talk about is the response I had to the newsletter I sent out on Friday. I asked people to get in touch if they’re Kings of War fans, or if they have a regular KoW gaming group, and so on. It didn’t take long for the emails to start flooding in, and it was lovely to read through them and find out how much people are really getting into the game! A story shared is a story bettered, so I thought I’d share a few highlights with you…

I have recently had a game of KOW (last night) and was shocked at how simple the mechanics were and how easy it was to grasp. I hate playing a game that makes me feel silly for not grasping the rules relatively quickly.
- Joel

Mantic is a success and has set the standard for wargame companies old and new. [...] Thanks to Mantic for doing what is says on the tin, affordable war gaming
- John

Once I got [my friend] to try out the KOW rules three years ago it’s become our go to game of choice whenever we are both free!  Also, I’ve been able to pull in a few non-gamers to play KOW with its elegant simplicity – my wife being one of them.  Our small stable of players is slowly growing and the plan is to eventually play a massive strategy campaign with moves, counter-moves, subterfuge, espionage, etc etc.  The reason why we’d be able to do this is because the game mechanics are so “simple” that after months of playing the game, new players feel no hesitancy to try out some more specific and expanded rules/ideas.
- Chris

I’ve been playing wargames for more years than I care to remember, from the very simple to the very complex. KOW is one of the simpler rules sets I use but its simplicity belies a tactical complexity that is really enjoyable and challenging. [...] But best of all is the really affordable cost of your miniatures and your unrestricted trading terms for Antipodean colonials such as myself. After paying through the nose for other supplier’s material it is nice to be able to acquire such a large and fearsome force without that nasty “HOW MUCH!!??” feeling.
- John (another one!)

That’s just a tiny selection from the emails I’ve received, and they’re still coming! What’s your Kings of War story, though? How did you get involved, and how did you introduce it to your gaming group? Tell us all about it in the comments section – I’m loving what I’ve heard so far!

Of course, I’ve been telling my own Kings of War story through recent entries on the blog, and regular readers will know that I went away at the weekend with a plan to build my Undead one-player battle set. Well, progress occurred!

20130617_104108

Braaaaaains!

Okay, not quite the progress I was hoping for, but it’s a start! The skeletons are still on my work desk at home, partially assembled. I’ll get some more pictures up when I’m done. Top tip for anyone building Kings of War models – make sure they fit together in a unit! I put each model in its place as I built it, bending or cutting as necessary to make sure it could fit snugly with the models around it. Once they’re painted I’m going to be sticking all 20 of them together on a home-made Regiment base (no ranking up before games for me!), but for now I’ve numbered their bases underneath using my trusty Sharpie so I know where they go. See? I’ve thought this through, and everything!

Are you working on anything at the moment? If so, why not send it to us in a mention on Twitter, or post in on our Facebook page? We look forward to seeing what you guys are up to!

More Undead for the masses!

Happy Saturday, blog-lovers! Hope you’re having a great day so far.

We don’t normally put up a blog post on a Saturday, so it’s just a quick one. I wanted you guys to see the other Undead videos that were sent to us by YouTube’s very own squidgybidge. (Also, I’m cheating. I’m actually writing this on Friday and scheduling it to go out tomorrow! All the more time for me to work on my Kings of War army.)

Again, this is a three-part series, kicking off with a look at the Skeletons on the sprue and talking through the components.

Next is a showcase of the painted unit. I love how grimy and dirt-spattered they look! I’m taking notes, here.

Finally, there’s a helpful guide for us mere mortals to follow if we want to attempt similar results.

So there we have it! We’ll be seeing more from Bidge very soon, so keep an eye on the blog. Hope you have a great weekend, guys – see you on Monday!

Stop the presses!

Okay, admittedly, there aren’t technically any presses to stop, this being a blog and everything, but I just found out something so awesome that I have to tell you all about it!

As you’re surely aware by now, I’m starting an Undead army. I’m starting out with the one-player battle set (£29.99, or $49.99 if you’re in the States) which gives me 20 Skeletons, 20 Zombies and 10 Ghouls. That’s all fine and dandy – a great price for a decent-sized block of troops to get painted. However, I’ve just found out that from Monday, we’ll be dropping the price of the Two Player Battle Set to £39.99 / $74.99 for three months!

If you’re not familiar with the Two Player Battle Set, it gives you an Undead army and an Orc army – so you can split the cost with a friend and get a starter army each. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you could start both armies yourself!

2-Player-Battle-Set---Undead

The Undead side of the battle set gives you the same deal you get in the one-player battle set, with the addition of a Troop of five Wraiths. Not bad at all when you’re paying less than you would for the one-player set! Also, the vast majority of the army is made up of multi-part plastic sets, meaning you’ve got a great chance for some variety within your units. Oh, I’ve got some plans for these models…

2 Player Battle set Orcs

The Orc half of the battle set is just as exciting – you really do get a good variety of units whichever side you pick. They get a 15-strong Ax Regiment, 5 Gore Riders and 20 Goblin Spitters. Goblins aren’t part of the Orc army list, but as a solid unit in the Goblin list they can be taken as allies, giving you some cheap missile troops. Finally, you get enough Orclings to fill a couple of bases – not enough for a Troop of 3, but enough for two individual bases, ideal for being a general annoyance to your opponent.

I did a bit of number-crunching and discovered that it’s possible to make two balanced army lists from the contents of the box. I’ve put these together as a nifty little download (right-click to save it!) so you can start playing straight away with the contents of your set! I’ve included a short summary of the rules for each unit, so it should save you flicking back and forth when you’re learning the rules. If you’d like to see more stuff like this, let me know in the comments below!

Right, that’s enough from me. I’m off home for the weekend to build me some zombies! I’ll definitely be picking up a discounted Two-Player Battle Set on Monday, and I imagine a fair few of you will be joining me! All I need to do now is find someone in the office to share the Two Player Battle Set with. I wonder who it’ll be…

Oh dear.

Oh dear.

Searching for Inspiration!

Hey gang!

It’s been a day since I admitted to my distinct lack of a Kings of War army, but I left the office last night with my head held high, full of excitement and eager to get building! Unfortunately, being a bit rubbish when it comes to self-motivation, I ended up going for a swim, eating dinner and promptly dozing off in front of the telly. Whoops.

I was going through my inbox shortly after arriving at work this morning and I spotted something that seems to be the ideal antidote to my laziness – a series of rather inspiring videos from YouTube hobby guru squidgybidge. After watching them, I’m raring to go again – to the point where I might just dig my clippers and glue out over lunch!

The videos that really caught my attention were the ones below – a three-part series on the Ghoul and Zombie kits, starting with a review of the kits themselves:

Next there’s a showcase, showing off how he’s painted them. (They look amazing!)

Finally, he’s kind enough to show us how he got them looking so great:

Awesome videos, right? He’s also sent us videos about the Kings of War Skeletons (I’ll post them up tomorrow!) and a load of DreadBall stuff (which we’ll look at next week). I’d say this is a YouTube page that’s worth subscribing to!

As ever, let us know what you think in the comments below. I’m off to get some sprues together!

Confessions of an Undead Collector

Okay, blog fans. Time to let you in on a little secret!

I’m ashamed to say that despite my extensive love of painting models, playing games and making terrain… I don’t have a Kings of War army.

I know. Isn’t it appalling? I’ve got various models that I’ve picked up and painted because I like them, I’ve even got a stack of boxes ready to be assembled, but I haven’t got an army. I’ve played the game several times, but it’s always been with stand-in models or someone else’s army. When I joined the Mantic gang at the start of April I knew that this just wouldn’t do, so I decided on an Undead army – as a long-time fan of cheesy horror movies, it was an obvious choice! However, between LOKA, Deadzone and DreadBall I haven’t yet had the chance to put my plans into motion. For shame!

Thwarted at every turn – especially by my trademark clumsiness when trying to pick up boxes from the Mantic warehouse. This did not end well.

Of course, with this month’s upcoming new releases, there’s never been a better time to be an Undead player, so if you’ll forgive the pun, I’m dead chuffed. If you check out the Advance Orders page, you’ll see two different army deals among the pile of new models. Ilona’s Death Guard is £99.99 ($149.99 or €119.99) and gets you over 1500 points, which is a great starting point for a new army. For the hardcore Undead fans out there, there’s also Ilona’s Black Wolf Templars at £149.99 ($249.99 or €184.99). This is the ultimate army deal, with which you can easily exceed 2000 points! That’s a tournament-ready Kings of War army available in one click.

Both of these armies are led by Lady Ilona, a new character from the upcoming Kings and Legends supplement. She’s also available on her own – she’s worth picking up even if you don’t plan on using her full rules, as you could use the model to represent a regular Vampire Lord (well, Lady) from the Undead Army list.

lady-ilona

Incidentally, you might recognise her from somewhere – yes, Lady Ilona is the vampire gracing the cover of the Kings of War rulebook! I’m sorely tempted to get working on a diorama… But that will have to wait, because nothing’s going to stop me getting my Undead army built and painted!

As you can see from the photo up above, I’ve already got my hands on a trio of awesome boxes. My plan is to work through these one set at a time, so my army builds in stages and I don’t get ahead of myself!

  • The Undead One-Player Battle Set was an absolute no-brainer for a starting point. 20 Skeletons, 20 Zombies and 10 Ghouls might not be a lot in game terms, but for perfecting my colour scheme and getting a good batch-painting system on the go, they’ll be invaluable. It’s really affordable, too, like all the other one-player battle sets; they’re great for trying out an army to see if you like the feel of it.
  • The Undead Army Set is the next port of call, and it should cover the bulk of my solid units. It gives me another 40 Skeletons, 30 Zombies and 20 Ghouls, as well as 20 Revenants. This will let me flesh out the units I’ve already put together while adding something new to paint. To really make the Revenants stand out from the massed Skeleton warriors, I’m thinking about converting a suitably impressive banner for the unit, and using it to represent a Magical Artefact of some sort.
  • Finally, I’ve gone for the Undead Elites Army Set. This will provide 10 more Ghouls and 20 more Revenants (a Revenant Horde isn’t something that can be ignored!), and adds some further variety in the form of 10 Revenant Knights, 5 Wraiths and a Balefire Catapult. This will make a nice reward for painting all those basic units!

According to my (fairly) careful calculations, this should give me a 1000-point army. One thing that’s missing, though, is the new stuff! I’m really tempted to pick up Ilona’s Death Guard – that would give me a Vampire to lead the force, some Mummies and Werewolves to play with, and whole heap of other units! It would bring me up to about 2,500 points, but more importantly it would let me pick and choose my units in smaller games for tactical flexibility.

werewolves-colour-shot

Of course, having recently seen just how brutal Werewolves are, I think
they’ll be turning up in every game I play!

I’ll be posting more as I make progress on the army, but in the meantime I’d love to hear from anyone else who’s doing the same! If you’ve been inspired to either start a new army or add to an existing one with the new Undead releases – or any of the new releases, for that matter – let me know in the comments below. If it all goes well, maybe we can get a game in some day!

The DGB visits WarGamesCon

Considering how much we do, Mantic has surprisingly few actual full-time members of staff. We do our best to get to as many events and shows as possible, but we can only stretch so far! Thankfully, we have an army of willing volunteers who are keen to spread the word of Mantic games, so when you see a Mantic stand at an event chances are it’s one of these heroes! (Do make sure you show them your appreciation. They’re absolute legends!)

Tom Taylor (who you can find on the Mantic Forums as TWTaylor) is one of our Stateside volunteers, and a member of the DreadBall Governing Body – our points of contact across the globe for running DreadBall events and supporting leagues. He’s sent us this write-up of his weekend at WarGamesCon – hopefully the first in a new wave of blog posts from guest authors. Have a read and let us know what you think in the comments!

I spent the past weekend at WarGamesCon in Austin, TX, demoing Dreadball for the attendees. This was really fun for me, for it was at this convention five years ago that I first came across Mantic’s miniatures in the swag bag given to attendees.

The Victorious Secrets faced off against the District 9 Prawns in many a demo over the weekend.

The Victorious Secrets faced the District 9 Prawns in many a demo over the weekend.

This year was by far the most fun I’ve had at this great event, which has grown exponentially in the five years it’s been going on. Everyone who was shown the game loved it, and the majority proceeded to the Spikey Bits booth next door to get their own teams and other Dreadball goodies.

Matt Neely got the first demo of the con, and wasted no time getting his own game to take home to and share with his friends.

Matt Neely was the first to try out DreadBall, and wasted no time in picking up a copy!

On Saturday night we held an after-hours rookie tournament, where I let players use one of my teams (assigned randomly) to compete in a three round tournament. Matt Brier took first place with the Victorious Secrets (my Void Sirens team), Matt McDonough got second with the Trontek 29ers team, and Jon Wolf – of Bell of Lost Souls fame – took home the “Most Kills” award with a Veer-myn team that never bothered to pick up the ball!

The after-hours tournament in full swing.

DreadBall’s so easy to pick up that even new players can enjoy a tournament!

I think it’s safe to say that a lot of people were sold on the game. Several told me they’d backed it on Kickstarter, but hadn’t had the chance to play before now; they assured me they’d be playing when they got back home!

Or even sooner - here I am teaching Alicia the ins and outs of Dreadball so she and her husband could have a game in their hotel room!

Or even sooner – here I am teaching Alicia the ins and outs of Dreadball so

Awesome write-up from Tom there – I’m amazed the players were able to concentrate on anything with that carpet, though! If you’re in the Texas area, Tom’s the man to talk to when it comes to DreadBall events. He tells me there’s a 12-team league starting at Alien Worlds on June 20th, and he’s looking at getting into a couple more cons this summer.
If you want to find out about local events, or you just want to find some new opponents, why not post on the DreadBall Communications Network section of the forum?

Want to paint for Mantic?

The Mantic team’s been growing a lot lately (especially following our recent successes with DreadBall and Deadzone), and now we’re moving our desks around in an attempt to fit one more in… yes, Mantic is recruiting again!

lotsa-skeletons

We’re looking for a studio painter and hobby specialist – the kind of person who can paint an army for display in a short space of time, but who can also turn out some beautiful pieces for close-up photography as well. Being able to get involved in the photography side of things is also a plus, so that’s definitely a desirable skill. If you think you’ve got what it takes, check out the Careers section of the Mantic website and get in touch! Here’s the link:

I’m trying to work out a pun on “toll-free” that explains we’re giving away free trolls, but I can’t think of one…

…so if you can think of one, let me know in a comment!

It hardly seems any time since we had our DreadBall Season 2 newsletter competition, and gave away a heap of stuff. We must be a little bit unhinged, because we’re doing it again! This time we want to spread the prize around a bit, so everyone’s got more chance of winning. That means we’re going to pick not one winner, but five, and each one will get a box our of new Kings of War Trolls!

trolls-colour-shot-for-blog

If you missed out last time, here’s how it works. On 1st July we’ll draw five names at random from our Newsletter subscribers, and send them an email to let them know they’ve won. If you want to be in with a chance, you just have to make sure you’ve signed up before the end of June. Easy enough! Full details are available at this link:

http://www.manticgames.com/Competitions.html

And on the subject of Trolls, Curis thought our models didn’t tally with his mental image, and came up with this…

Good luck with the competition, and happy Trolling!

James gets Grumpy!

Well, I dunno about you lot, but I’m exhausted! After the mental month that was the Deadzone Kickstarter (finishing at midnight on the Sunday!) we all got back to work last week and set to ploughing through the large drifts of work that had begun to pile up. The week ended with a bang (several, in fact – I’m sure you all saw Curis’ account!) and in a full-on display of caffeine-fuelled insanity, I didn’t stop there!

Not dead, just napping.

Not dead, just power-napping.

As soon as I’d showered the paint out of my hair and counted my bruises – a paltry 3, compared to our accountant Mark’s frankly baffling 28 – I jumped in the car and headed south to the Grumpy Old Wargamers convention at Tabletop Nation in Essex! For anyone who’s not had the chance to visit the venue, it’s a combined shop, gaming hall and bar (woohoo!) situated a short train journey from London. Its shelves are crammed with exciting games and miniatures, and the staff are a lovely bunch indeed. More to the point, TTN is home to the Beasts of War crew, and they were out in force all weekend!

I spent the next two days running demos of DreadBall for dozens of attendees, ably assisted by Pathfinder John whenever he got a break from the Kings of War games he was running. It was great to see so many people getting excited about DreadBall, and there was a real mix; some people had never heard of the game but wanted to give it a go, some had bought a copy but not had a chance to play, and one or two were seasoned coaches looking to get a serious game in!

Photo shamelessly borrowed from the Beasts of War site.

No, my expression makes no sense to me, either.
Photo kindly provided by Lloyd from the BoW crew.

The strangest part from me was the number of people who knew me from the DreadBall Academy series on the Beasts of War site. If you’re not familiar with DreadBall Academy, it’s a great way to learn the rules to everyone’s favourite futuristic sports game. Each episode involves myself and Beasts of War’s Warren playing through a game and explaining it as we go, introducing new rules a few at a time. Before the first episode Warren hadn’t really played a proper game, and he’s now a raving DreadBall fan, so I think it’s been a success! More to the point, I met more than one person at the weekend who was capable of playing a full game just after watching the videos and skimming through the rulebook.

There are three episodes so far, with several more on the way. If you want to catch up, here are the links!

Episode 1: Learning the Game

Episode 2: Veer-myn and Forge Fathers

  • Sticking to the basic rules, this episode brings in two new teams as my Forge Fathers tackle Warren’s Veer-myn

Episode 3: The Full Game Rules

  • We go back to our starting teams and play a game with the full rules, introducing cards, fouling and the referee. We use the full contents of the full DreadBall game (a.k.a. Deluxe Edition), so if you’ve got Kick-Off you can get your hands on all the additional pieces by grabbing the Extra Time Set.

Make sure you check those videos out, and let us know what you think in the comments! We’re looking at possibly doing a similar series for Kings of War – how does that sound?

I’ll sign off by saying a massive thank-you to everyone who was involved in Grumpy Old Wargamers – I can safely say that they actually weren’t grumpy at all, and I thought they wore their age rather well! It was a massive pleasure to see so many Mantic fans, and I’m already looking forward to the next one… See you there!
